VIN Number
The acronym "VIN" stands for Vehicle Identification Number, a seventeen character alphanumeric code used to uniquely identify individual vehicles in the United States. The numbers have been standardized since 1980 and may not contain the letters Q, O, or I.
In North America the first three digits of a VIN signify the identity of the manufacturer according to the World Manufacturer Identifier code. For instance 1G1 is a Chevrolet passenger car and 1GC would be a Chevrolet truck.
Digits four through nine of a VIN are the Vehicle Descriptor Section with the ninth being the check digit which is compulsory in North America. The tenth digit through the seventeenth is the Vehicle Identifier Section including model year and North American plant code. For instance the letter P is used for 1993, S for 1995, V for 1997 and Y for 2000.
Among their other purposes, VINs are used to obtain vehicle histories for insurance purposes.
