Acts of God
An event, such as a natural disaster (flood, tornado, hurricane, or similar occurrence) that exists outside the realm of human control is, in legal terms, referred to as an "act of God." Normally, for legal considerations, there is a distinction made between acts of God that are completely unavoidable and those acts of God which the individual could have avoided by leaving an area or by taking some level of precautions.
This distinction is important in insurance terms, as some policies even if specifically written to cover an act of God such an earthquake will not return benefits if the policy holder has taken actions considered to increase the likelihood of earthquake damage rather than to decrease it.
As related to the insurance of motor vehicles, most automobile policies do not cover damage to the car in the event of an act of God but the automobile may be covered under other policies specifically designed to cover such damage if the vehicle owner has specifically asked for the vehicle to be placed under the terms of the policy.
