Defensive Driving Courses
The insurance industry operates on a model of risk assessment. Actuaries apply mathematical and statistical principles to evaluations of life events and activities to determine the likelihood of such events occurring. Insurance companies take these assessments into account when underwriting (deciding which events to cover).
In terms of automobile or vehicle insurance, a driver who has been involved in multiple accidents or who has received a high number of traffic tickets for exceeding the speed limit or for other moving violations is consider to be a higher insurance risk than a driver with a perfect record. Normally, when a driver receives a traffic citation they will see an increase in their insurance premium.
Defensive Driving courses are normally one day courses taught by certified instructors that serve to refresh the driver's awareness of the laws of a given state and of the principles of the safe operation of a vehicle. It is a routine practice for a driver who has received a ticket to take such a class either to secure the dismissal of the ticket and its associated fine or to achieve a reduction in their insurance premiums (or both).
