Head On Collision
A head-on collision is a vehicular accident in which the front end of the two vehicles in question make forcible contact with one another. In the context of automobile transit, most head-on collisions occur on highways or freeways, which are thoroughfares designed to facilitate a high volume of speed for a large number of cars. Generally a vehicle wanders or veers into oncoming traffic suddenly and drivers have little if any time to react. The resulting automobile crashes almost always involve one or more fatalities.
Although every traffic situation is unique, head-on collisions frequently result in multi-car pile-ups, especially on busy highways moving at a high rate of speed. Essentially the first two vehicles to strike one another in turn strike other vehicles creating a "domino" effect. While highways use special signage to avoid confusion at off-ramps where drivers may become confused and go the wrong way, the reasons behind such collisions can range from instances of driving while intoxicated to a driver falling asleep behind the wheel.
