Hotwiring
When a thief bypasses the ignition interlock on an automobile for the purpose of starting the vehicle without the key, the process is referred to as "hotwiring." In an instance of a lost key, it is legal for a technician to hotwire a car with the consent of the owner but under most circumstances hotwiring is an element of criminal activity.
There are two classic methods of hotwiring a car. With the first, the thief completes the ignition circuit of the car by locating the ignition wires where they attach to the ignition switch. These wires are normally located under the dashboard. The thief detaches the wires and crosses their exposed ends.
In the second method, the thief momentarily completes the circuit in order to make the starter turn over the car's motor. This is accomplished by detaching the starter wire from the ignition wire and touching it to a powered wire on the opposite side of the ignition switch.
