Secondary Driver
Routinely an automobile insurance policy is taken out in the name of the primary driver who is actually the owner of the vehicle to be insured. If, however, another individual will routinely drive the vehicle as well, that person's name is added to the policy as a duly insured secondary driver. For instance, if both a husband and wife own their own vehicles but do, at times drive the other's car, each person would have a primary automobile insurance policy in their own name but would also be listed on their spouse's policy as a secondary driver. As children in the family become of legal driving age, they too might be added to one or both of their parent's policies as secondary drivers. (In insurance terminology such drivers may also be referred to as occasional drivers.)
By designating a secondary driver on a policy, the policy holder insures that both the car and whoever may be driving the car are adequately covered in the event of an automobile accident. More Glossary Terms Explained here
