Steering Restraint
As an aspect of vehicular security, a steering restraint is a collar or shield constructed of sufficiently durable material to be resistant to tampering that is fitted around the upper and lower casings of an automobile's steering column. Such a steering restraint is fitted to a vehicle for the express purpose of making it more difficult for a car thief to gain access to the automobile's ignition system for the purpose of "hotwiring" the car.
"Hotwiring" is the process whereby the live wires of a vehicle's ignition system are exposed to bypass the ignition interlock and to start the vehicle's engine without actually having the car key. The methods employed complete the ignition circuit either "permanently" or temporarily to cause the engine to "turn over."
By taking an anti-theft precaution like the installation of a steering restraint, the holder of an automobile insurance policy may qualify for a discount on their policy's premium or fee.
