Totaled
"Totaled" is a term used in the vernacular of the automobile or vehicle insurance industry which refers to an assessment applied to an insured vehicle that has been involved in an accident. In investigating the claim (the request for the terms of the insurance policy to be invoked for the purposes of collecting money to pay for damages) the insurance company may determine that the cost of repairing a vehicle is greater than the cost of replacing the vehicle. When that occurs, the vehicle is declared to be totaled (a total loss) and the holder of the insurance policy receives the amount of money judged appropriate for the replacement of the vehicle.
A number of factors are involved in the determination of "totaling" a car. For instance, older vehicles with high mileage that are in poor condition are more likely to be "totaled" than newer vehicles with low mileage in good condition. In general terms it is fair to say that the value of the vehicle prior to the accident is a major determining factor in whether the automobile is likely to be declared a total loss or is judged to be a good candidate for repair.
